Texas Crickets Pest Patrol and March 2019 UpdatePest Patrol Centipedes and Crickets: Plano, Frisco, McKinney, Denton County, Dallas County and surrounding areasThere are several species of crickets in this area ranging in size from 1⁄2 to 1 1⁄2 inches long. One of their most recognizable features is the ability to make a chirping sound with their body. Their preferred habitat is outside in cool, dark, damp places like under logs, rocks, leaves and wood. But under the right conditions, they will invade homes. A cricket may have been a beloved character in the movie Pinocchio, but you won’t love them in your home! The three big problems with crickets are damage, noise and disease. Damage: Crickets are adaptable eaters. They prefer plants but will happily devour paper, fabric (clothes, drapes, bedding, upholstery), wallpaper glue, fur, garbage, and pet food. Noise: Crickets are nocturnal. They hide during the day but at night they come out to feed. The males chirp. Loudly! A cricket concert likely will disturb your sleep. Disease: Crickets may bite if manhandled but their mouthparts usually cannot piece human skin. However they do carry diseases and parasites that can be transmitted by touch such as E. Coli, Salmonella and worms. (If someone in your household develops flu-like symptoms after handling a cricket, the two might be related!) You may be able to prevent a cricket invasion by keeping the perimeter of your house free of clutter, storing trash bins away and sealing potential entry points. Turning exterior lights OFF will make your home LESS attractive. Our quarterly pest control service will keep crickets outside where their chirping will be a melodic sound of nature, instead of a sleep-depriving nuisance inside your home.
